BANGALORE: Decades after starting procurement of defence-related equipment, BEML has now proposed to ‘gate’ its property to protect ‘sensitive’ equipment and installations, earning the ire of locals. The company’s officials claim that the proposal has been in place for over 10 years but concede that the locals have prevented every effort towards regulation of entry in the area. The area in question would be the extension of Dr Rajkumar Road into BEML quarters, the Kala Mandir and more importantly the BEML hockey and cricket ground. The ground is where BEML, at times, parks its Tatra vehicles and Metro rail coaches. The officials stated that they have not received any requests for providing a separate road. “We have left 30 feet-wide road near Skylark Apartments and will make provisions for the public residing near LB Shastri Nagar, if requested,” officials under the condition of anonymity told Express. They also stated that BEML has other pending proposals to raise the existing wall around the ground and also complete the wall structure near L B Shastri Nagar as well. “We had erected a gate on the other entrance about two months ago, but we have not stopped the public from entering from there. There is currently no proposal to stop the public from using the road,” officials shared. They also claimed that local legislators had been consulted for the same and alleged that a former councillor was instigating the public against the move. On the local children using the ground, they stated that the it is not meant for the public in the first place and that the locals were not authorised to use it. “We use this road regularly for many years now and so far they have not had a problem. Why have they realised this now?” Ali, a shopkeeper said.
