HYDERABAD: Police foiled the attempts of B.Ed graduates to lay siege to the Secretariat here on Friday demanding the withdrawal of GO number 7 which had accommodated 70 per cent promotions to Secondary Grade Teachers as School Assistants (SA) in the state government schools.
Police shifted the protesters to the Nampally police station and released them latter. Speaking to Express, B.Ed Students Association president Alvala Madhusudan demanded scrapping of GO No. 7 and direct recruitment of only B.Ed candidates to the posts. If the government did not meet their demand, he warned, they would move the court to stall the recruitment process. He said the government issued GO No. 3 on January 8 on taking up recruitment of all the 9,569 SA posts through direct recruitment with B.Ed candidates. But, following opposition from teachers' associations which have many SGT teachers as members, the government issued GO number 7 on the very next day (Jan 9) stating that only 30 pc posts would be filled through direct recruitment and 70 pc through promotions, thus doing great injustice to B.Ed students, he said.

Association general Secretary Maram Tirupathi Reddy said that till the 2008 DSC notification, B.Ed candidates had been eligible to compet for SGT posts but would be denied the eligibility in the DSC notification to be issued in the next few days for recruitment to 11,000 SGT posts for which 40,000 D.Ed diplomaholders will compete. Though there are 9,569 vacant SA posts in the state, the government will fill only 2,870 posts with B.Ed candidates and 6,670 by giving promotions to SGTs.
