Guwahati: The Centre on Thursday asked the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) not to jeopardise the National Games in Guwahati from February 9.
"I renew the Chief Minister's appeal for ULFA to withdraw its boycott because it is an occasion for them to be proud of Assam rather than issuing boycott calls," said Union Home Secretary V K Duggal.
The government will ensure that the games “will be absolutely safe, smooth and successful," said Duggal, who inspected security with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. "Security to sportspersons and people coming for the sporting event will be full-proof.”
"We have taken every step in a proactive manner. I am quite satisfied and hope all will go peacefully as planned," he was quoted by PTI as saying.
Over 12,000 people are expected to visit Assam for the Games. About ULFA’s boycott call, he said: "I hope it is not serious but we have to be prepared. It's a people's event, a community event. It's an occasion for people to be proud that Assam is hosting the event.
Duggal said there was now plan to call in the Army for security. "There is no intention of changing any security plan. We will be reinforcing wherever required but (it is) not that the army will be required. There will be no shortage of paramilitary forces."
