KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation authorities will conduct frequent inspections on various construction sites in the city to make sure that the migrant workers are provided with proper shelter and other basic facilities.A monitoring cell will be constituted for this purpose with the Health standing committee chairman as the president. The decision to form the committee was taken at a special meeting held at the council hall here on Saturday to discuss the health related issues faced by the migrant workers.“The construction companies that are violating the norms will have to face serious actions and the civic body will issue a stop memo to the violators,” Mayor Tony Chammany said after the meeting. The Mayor said that the construction companies were instructed to submit details of the migrant workers in the Corporation office and the District Labour Office. “The migrant workers should be provided with proper accommodation as instructed by the District Labour Officer. They should also be provided with quality food and drinking water. In order to create an awareness of hygiene among them, the Corporation will conduct awareness campaigns for the labourers,” added the Mayor. He said that the inauguration of the awareness campaign will be on June 5. “The awareness campaign will be organised in association with Rajagiri Outreach. Posters in various languages which display the hazards of using drugs and narcotics will also be pasted in various parts of the city,” Chammany added.
