CUTTACK: Atmaja will now be housed at the Step Down SNCU under the Neonatal care unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH). The one month and nine-day-old baby girl, who has been deprived of parental care due to the child swapping controversy, will be shifted to the Step Down unit, where the newborns are put up for recuperation and monitoring on discharge from the SNCU, on Wednesday.  The decision to put her up at the unit adjacent to the SNCU was taken at a meeting chaired by Collector Girish SN on Tuesday even as the authorities had earlier planned to shift her to a special cabin of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) department. The meeting attended by Superintendent Prof DN Moharana, head of the SNCU Prof SN Parida, head of O&G Prof Shyama Kanungo and amicus curiae PR Das decided on the change as it would ensure proper care round-the-clock to the baby.  The authorities observed that there was security risk in sheltering her at the special cabin as it was on the ground floor of O&G department and along the main corridor. The Step Down SNCU would be ideal for the purpose as it was not only a secured and restricted zone but also in proximity to the workplaces of the nurses and the staff who had made the baby their own.  “The six-bed Step Down unit is being readied to take Atmaja in. Two beds are being temporarily removed to accommodate the baby along with her crib. The girl has also been immunised as per the schedule,”  Prof Parida said.Three junior doctors and four nurses have been assigned the responsibility of taking care of the baby girl.
