The two suspects arrested in the killing of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddiqui in Mumbai’s Bandra last night claimed that they belong to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Bollywood actor Salman Khan has also been receiving threats from the gang for the past few months.

Three shooters, including the arrested Gurmail Baljit Singh, 23, and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap, 19, who hail from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, fired six bullets at Siddiqui outside his son’s office in Kher Nagar around 9.30 pm on Saturday. Two bullets hit the 66-year-old NCP leader’s chest, as per sources. The NCP leader was taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he was declared dead.

A case has been registered at Nirmal Nagar Police Station under Crime Registration No. 589/2024, Sections 103(1), 109, 125, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3, 25, 5, and 27 of the Arms Act, and Section 37 and section 137 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

Police sources said the four suspects did the recce of Siddiqui’s house in Bandra West for two months. Sources also claimed that the shooters tracked the movement of his son Zeeshan Siddique, a Congress MLA from Bandra (East), who represented the Bandra (West) seat thrice in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, and other family members.

The police, who were deputed for security during the Dussehra celebrations, nabbed the two shooters on the way but the third one escaped. They suspect the involvement of a fourth person who was providing information of Siddiqui’s location.

A 9.9 MM pistol was used in the firing, say sources. Police said Siddiqui had received death threats 15 days ago, after which his security was increased to Y category.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reached Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital late Saturday night to meet Siddiqui’s family. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, along with senior police officials, Union Minister and RPI (A) chief Ramdas Athawale and Ajit Pawar’s son Parth Pawar also reached the hospital. Shinde has mentioned taking strict action against those who took the law into their own hands.
