THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar has said that Kerala should focus on extending its tourism possibilities to more destinations with the aim of attracting more tourists to the State. He was inaugurating the 10th State Representative Meeting of the Kerala Tourism Workers’ Congress (INTUC) at Kesari Hall here on Monday. Though immense possibilities could be traced in tourism sector, they are scattered in government, private and public sectors and a large portion lies with the private sector. A quarter of a century back, Kerala attracted mere 200 foreign tourists per annum. As of now, nearly 7-8 lakh foreign tourists fly to God’s own country, besides having 85 lakh people in the domestic sector, the Minister said. With the increase in number of tourists spots, care should be given to keep them in an extremely good condition. Neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka and several other states in India are now exploring their tourism potential, which raises a pretty good competition in this scenario. There should be efforts to attract more and more foreign tourists to the State, he added. In response to the demand from the DTPC workers to consolidate their working conditions, the Minister said discussions will be held later. A K Hafeez, KTWC State president, presided over.
