Attempt to overtake led to accident

An alleged attempt by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) driver Sundarapandian on route 6A to overtake four vehicles ahead of him led to a freak accident in which one person was killed on Santhome High Road here on Thursday, a senior MTC official said.

“The driver swerved the bus to the other side of the road in a desperate attempt to overtake the vehicles,” the official said, adding that the erring driver would be suspended. Asked about the condition of the bus, official sources claimed that it was in good condition and there was no mechanical or technical fault.

“In fact, only some parts of the bus, including the engine, were damaged in the accident. There was no break failure,” an official said. Official sources pointed out that Sundarapandian, attached to the Tondiarpet bus depot, was an experienced crew member who was appointed in 1996. However, the sources did not provide information about his track record as a driver.

Trade Union Blames ‘Poor’ Bus Condition

The State Transport Employees Union has charged that poor maintenance was the prime for such accidents. According to the union’s secretary Anbazhagan, manpower shortage is responsible for the poor maintenance of the vehicles.
