The celebration of Pattanaaje in Kateelu is a grand event. Kateelu is a temple town in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The six troupes of Kateelu’s Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple have concluded their Yakshagana tour recently. For 167 days, these six troupes from the temple performed Yakshagana in various parts of the coastal region of Dakshina Kannada. During Pattanaaje, all six troupes performed their final service play simultaneously in front of the temple, symbolically removing their anklets and concluding this season’s Yakshagana journey. The final service play of the year for the six troupes of Kateelu Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple took place in front of the temple. They performed the Panchakalyani episode, featuring Vishalakshi, Vanajakshi, Meenakshi, Chitrakshi, and Kanjakshi. Following the event, a final performance was held directly in front of the deity inside the temple, accompanied by the supporting and leading musicians.

After the deity’s worship, prasad was distributed to the Bhagavathas (singers) and the troupe managers. The artists then removed their anklets in front of the deity, marking the end of this season’s tour. For 167 days, from evening till midnight, the artists performed Yakshagana with great dedication, breathing life into their characters and enriching the cultural heritage of the coastal region. Although the current season has ended, the continued support and love for Yakshagana from the coastal people bring hope and optimism to the artists. It is notable that in the next tour, the artists and Bhagavathas of the six troupes will switch roles and perform different characters. All these arrangements will be managed by the troupe administrators.
