New Delhi: Former Assam home minister and student leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday after battling liver and lung ailments for three weeks.
Fifty-year-old Phukan is survived by his wife and a daughter.
Phukan, was brought to Delhi from Guwahati about three weeks back for treatment after his condition deteriorated.
He was later shifted to the ICU of the AIIMS and had been on life support system for last six days.
His body will be flown to Guwahati for last rites tomorrow.
Born at Sibsagar in Upper Assam on April 25, 1956, Phukan, a law graduate, was a leading figure of the six-year-old agitation (1979-85) against illegal migrants by All Assam Students' Union along with former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. Mahanta was the president of the influential student body and Phukan was its general secretary.
Phukan was one of the signatories to the 1985 historic Assam Accord between the AASU and the Centre that brought to an end the bloodshed during six-years anti-foreigners agitation.
Phukan rose to prominence during the drive launched by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) against illegal Bangladeshi aliens in the state in the late 1970s.
He later became a senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the political party formed by the student activists, and served as Assam's home minister.
He was recently named the AGP's candidate for the Jalukbari seat for the upcoming assembly elections in Assam.
