Two security personnel, including an army Major, were injured in an attack by unidentified militants in Nagaland’s Mon district on Tuesday.
Defence sources said a group of armed militants carried out a stand-off attack on the 41 Assam Rifles camp at Lempong Shingha village situated along the Tizit-Mon road.
The incident took place around 2.20am when the insurgents targeted the Charlie Company post and the sentry post. The Assam Rifles troops opened retaliatory fire and the gunfight lasted for several minutes. Fired cartridges of multiple grenade launchers were recovered from the spot. The militants reportedly managed to escape in the cover of darkness.
The company commander — an army Major on deputation with the Assam Rifles — sustained minor injuries, while the sentry on duty had to be taken to the Jorhat military hospital. The condition of both the personnel is said to be stable.
According to sources, National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K) militants are suspected to be behind the attack.
Three ULFA (Independent) cadre and one Indian Army officer of the Naga Regiment were killed in an encounter near Lappa Lempong area of Mon district bordering Myanmar in June last year. This sector is also identified as the infiltration and exfiltration route for NSCN-K and ULFA-Independent operatives via Myanmar where militant outfits have their hideouts and training camps.
