CHENNAI: Even as demolition work continues on the upper floors of the skeletal structure that played host to the fast by volunteers of India Against Corruption in August 2011, the tricolour paint on the pillars on the ground floor continues to mark the spot that saw 51 people fast for 12 days demanding a strong Lok Pal Bill. The building envisioned as an IT park had been standing unfinished for years, thanks to lack of interest in the project from prospective clients. The original constructor, Surendra Developers, brought the project back to life albeit in a different form by collaborating with residential property major Ramaniyam.Once the skeletal remains of the building are torn down completely, the site is set to become an upscale residential complex. For a site that stood solemn and gloomy for around four years, it is now the scene of vivid and emotive recollections for local shopkeepers. “It was the site of an unprecedented show of public opinion. It is sad it had to go this way,” says Raju, who runs a shop nearby.Thousands of people from all walks of life had flocked the venue to express support for the volunteers of India Against Corruption and send a message to the establishment against corruption.
