Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday led an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh against notifying the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal II (KWDT II) award.
Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Water Supply K Jana Reddy, who was part of the delegation, said that they requested the Centre to implead in a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed against the tribunal's order in the Supreme Court. The Government of India must implead and argue for the justice of the entire nation, he added.
Asked about Manmohan Singh's response, Jana Reddy informed that the Prime Minister had said that a study should be done on the whole issue. "They want to study the whole issue of what authority we have," he added. The all-party delegation included various representatives from Congress, TDP, YSR Congress Party and two left parties.
TDP MLA Chandrasekhar Reddy said the delegation has represented the 'injustice' done to the state through the tribunal award. "We wanted the Union Government to intervene at this stage and conduct an indepth study," he stated.
Headed by Justice Brijesh Kumar, the tribunal had delivered its final award on November 29, in which a firm allocation of 1,005 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water from Krishna was made to Andhra Pradesh.
Besides, it also permitted Karnataka to raise the height of the Alamatti Dam from 519.6m to 524.25m. Though the Government of Andhra Pradesh has sought 14 amendments to the tribunal's interim award announced on December 30, 2010, the tribunal only increased the state's water allocation by a negligible four tmcft in its final order, by factoring in 65 per cent dependability, as against the 75 per cent factored in by the earlier tribunal.
