KARAIKAL: The Puducherry UT wing of BJP’s Kisan Morcha has urged the Union government to make amendments to the Land Acquisition Act and introduce a new bill in the monsoon session of Parliament.Elangovan, president of the Morcha, handed over a memorandum in this connection to the Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Dr Iqbal Singh for forwarding the same to the President of India. In the memorandum, Elangovan had pointed out that the farmers were not getting adequate compensation when lands were acquired. The present Land Acquisition Act was not adequately equipped to render justice to them.“The act should be amended to ensure that the land acquisition is done only in larger national interests and not for favouring private businesses. Farmers should get proper compensation. Farmers rehabilitation plan should precede the land acquisition,” he said and added that fertile lands should never be allowed to be acquired for business purposes. The farmers should be given cultivable land at other places in exchange of the land acquired.
