CHENNAI: It was an unexpected face-off for 40-year-old policeman N Murali in the wee hours of Thursday. After finishing duty at 2 am, Murali, a head constable attached to the Basin Bridge police station, started walking towards his housing quarters in B V Colony, Vysarpadi. As he neared his house, he saw two men coming in his direction. He then realised that one of them was Muthu Batcha, a habitual offender who had been evading police net for many years. “Batcha had several cases registered against him in different police stations,” Murali told Express. When he saw Batcha crossing the road, Murali promptly informed SI Rangarajan. “The rowdy was right within my sight and I didn’t want him to escape,” he said. “I grabbed Batcha’s collar in one hand and his associate Shanker in another.” However, things almost started getting out of hand when Shanker put up a fight. Luckily, on hearing the commotion, local residents intervened.
