PUDUCHERRY: AIADMK members of the Puducherry Assembly, on Wednesday, boycotted the session to protest against the convening of the Assembly session only for the election of the deputy speaker. In a statement, MLA and secretary of Puducherry unit of AIADMK A Anbazhagan said it was unacceptable that the Assembly had been convened for just an hour to elect the deputy speaker, especially at a time when there were several important issues that needed to be discussed. He pointed out that several issues including distribution of sub-standard and inedible free rice through PDS, lack of rain relief, deteriorating law and order and non-action against education minister PML Kalyanasundaram against whom the Tamil Nadu police have registered cases required discussion. He said that the law and order situation was not under control as there had been more than 24 murders, 100 thefts and other crimes in the five months that the AINRC had been in power. Moreover, election promises made by Chief minister N Rangasamy as well as the assurances given on the floor of the house were yet to be fulfilled. The government had also failed to obtain adequate funds from the Centre for implementing schemes, said Anbazagan. He also charged that none of the 4000 retrenched government employees had been taken back into service despite assurances of providing employment. On the other hand, several persons from his constituency were given jobs through backdoor appointments. Employees of several government organisations had not been paid their salaries for several months now, he said. Speaking on the downpour that had lashed the district, he said that the torrential rains during the past 10 days several people had been affected as they could not go for work and no relief had been given to them.Reiterating his party’s stand, Anbazhagan said the AIADMK felt that it was not correct to attend the session. Hence all the MLAs of the party boycotted the session.
