It was a lucky day for those who visited the Central Railway Station on Tuesday morning. Eager tots with smiles on their faces and a spring in their step greeted visitors, offered them chocolates and tied armbands around them.

The event was part of the Joy of Giving festival that is being held throughout this week.

Clad in white T-shirt and matching caps, the kids appeared pretty enthusiastic. The visitors, on their part, were surprised initially, but were only too happy to accept the sweets and allowed the kids to tie the armbands.

It was interesting to observe the children’s behaviour. As soon as they ran out of wristbands, a few ran up to the ones to whom they had tied it, asking for it to be returned it so that they could give it to others.

Speaking to City Express, Prasanna, a volunteer from Vidyarambham Trust, said that the gesture was organised as part of the Joy of Giving Week Celebrations. He added that as many as 35 kids from three different orphanages were involved in the gesture. “The idea is to inculcate the habit of giving and the joy it elicits among the younger generation,” he said.

This is the second year that children are taking participating in this event.

Does this have anything to do with the recent exodus of frightened masses to the North East? No, says Arathi, a volunteer of Joy of Giving. She adds that the event has no political motive attached to it whatsoever, and that it’s a festival in which everyone can partake.
