BANGALORE: Following the alleged attack on Dr Niranjan B R, Director of Correspondence Courses and Distance Education (DCC&DE) of Bangalore University (BU) by a group of 30 men lead by Sri Rama Sene leader Pramod Mutalik on Friday, Governor and Chancellor of the university H R Bharadwaj has said that he would take action after discussing the matter with Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev.“I read about the attack in the newspapers. I will take appropriate legal action after discussing with the VC,” Governor Bharadwaj told reporters on the sidelines of a programme on Saturday. Sri Rama Sene men had alleged barged into Niranjan’s office on Friday afternoon and slapped him. They also allegedly vandalised the university property. A fax machine and a telephone were broken, apart from furniture being flung around. The group was apparently representing candidates from the study centres in Raichur, Davangere, Koppal and Bangalore (Vijaynagar). BU had declared the exams conducted at these centres during August as null and void due to alleged malpractices. The centres were asked to install CCTVs before the scheduled re-examinations on December 14, which they did not do. The attackers, in a letter to Niranjan, demanded that the exams be conducted on December 26 without CCTVs. They also went on to threaten that they would ‘burn the University’ if their demand was not met. VC Dr N Prabhu Dev, who was in Belgaum when the attack took place, said that he would be meeting the Governor on Monday.  “We are examining the correct action that can be taken. I will brief him about the situation and then decide on the action to be taken,” said the VC. He further added, “We have been working on exam reforms for three years now, struggling to put a transparent process in place. We have clearly instructed them to have CCTVs in place to avoid malpractices. This is an attempt to subvert our efforts. Who is Mutalik to come and tell us? What is his role? He has given us a deadline to conduct the exams (December 26). We cannot yield to such elements,” said VC Prabhu Dev.Niranjan, who was taken to Victoria Hospital and was discharged later, said the doctors were worried about his left ear.   Niranjan has registered a complaint of manhandling at the Ulsoor Gate police station and has said that one of the staff members has identified the student who slapped him as belonging to the Diksoochi Study Centre, Davangere.
