Srinagar: The police in Jammu and Kashmir have taken some tough steps to cool public outrage after two bodies were exhumed from a graveyard in Ganderbal in Kashmir.
Armed with enough evidence the police has arrested SSP SOG H R Parihar and DSP Bahudur Ram—the two accused of killing innocent civilians after dubbing them as militants.
This is being seen as one of the first tough stands by the J&K police over fake encounters. DIG Farooq Ahmad said, “Yes, we have got enough scientific evidence to book Parihar and others. We will be doing more arrests soon.''
The horrific revelations emerged not only in Ganderbal but also at Ajas, where police and forensic experts exhumed another body. Mother of four, Saleema, waited as her husband Ghulam Nabi Wani's body is dug out.
Wani was a street vender killed allegedly in a fake encounter. This is the third of the five bodies that police exhumed as they investigate this case.
The family of Ghulam Nabi was inconsolable. His brother Zahoor said, “I have identified his body. His arm has name inscribed on it, my poor brother.''
The Government is promising tough action against the accused. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “I will not tolerate any nonsense while I will be very harsh with the militants."
"There will be no let off whatsoever in putting pressure on the militants but at the same I had said that no innocent will be ill treated,” he added.
The police have collected samples for DNA tests. Though relatives have identified the bodies, police want to gather enough scientific evidence to book the culprits.
Initial investigations have revealed that all five, mostly from poor families in Kokernag, were killed in staged gun battles. People fear these may just be the tip of the iceberg.
In the radius of 20 kilometres, the SOG Ganderbal unit had arrested and later killed five people burying them secretly. But this time the police has decided to act tough.
Not only it has taken action against the SSP and his deputy, but it has also perhaps set an example that nobody is above law.
