KOCHI: Thousands of cardamom planters and workers in the state would come under the Personal Accident Insurance scheme, which would be launched by the Spices Board on Friday.Spices Board chairman A Jayathilak will launch the scheme by releasing the first five policies to cardamom growers at a function at the Indian Cardamom Research Institute, Myladumpara, Idukki. The scheme has been initiated by the Ministry of Commerce as a social security programme for workers and growers of plantation crops under the Price Stabilisation Fund Trust Scheme (PSFT).Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company, which will run the scheme, will cover growers aged between five and 80 years and workers aged between 14 and 80. The growers would get enrolled as PSFT members by paying a registration fee of `100.  The workers would not be required to pay the membership fee but only their share of the annual premium.  The workers associated with registered growers would get insurance coverage up to Rs 1 lakh.The growers and workers need to pay 50 per cent of the annual premium of Rs 22. PSFT will pay the remaining amount. Growers having plantations up to four hectares would benefit from the scheme. The benefits include compensation of Rs 1 lakh for death due to accident or permanent total disablement due to accident, Rs 1 lakh for the loss of two limbs or two eyes, Rs 1 lakh for the loss of one eye and one limb and Rs 60,000 for the loss of one eye or one limb.   The scheme also has a provision to pay Rs 15,000 or the equivalent of three months prevalent wages to workers after major and serious injury, and consequent loss of employment for a continuous period of three months or more.
