Ending a 14-month of agony, the Koyilandy native, who was kidnapped by an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group in Southern Philippines in June 2011 managed to escape in the wee hours of Friday.
Biju K V, 36, telephoned his parents at Moodadi near Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, around 2.45 am informing them about his escape from the confinement.
“The first call came around 2.45 am and Biju said that he was released and was doing good. Later, he called around 10 am. The latest call came at 3 pm on Thursday in which he clarified that he got away from the group at night after dinner and contacted police authorities with the help of a Philippines national,” said Shybu K V, brother of Biju, in Kozhikode. Shybu said Biju’s wife Elena and children Arjun and Ajay are with Biju at the police headquarters and Biju has also undergone a medical check-up. “Biju said that he could return to Kerala only after meeting the Governor of Sulu Province. We hope that the formalities would be cleared within in a few days,” he said.
Shybu said that Biju had earlier contacted his parents in Koyilandy nearly two months ago from the terror camp in the presence of abductors. “In March 2012, there were reports that Biju was executed by the Abu Sayyaf group as the ransom demanded by the militants was not paid. This fear was allayed when Biju telephoned us two months ago.”
