The state is in constant touch with the Centre to ensure the release of Malayalee sailors abducted by Somali pirates and a cabinet sub-committee of the Union Government is expected to frame a policy soon, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
Replying to a submission of Thomas Unniyadan (Kerala Congress-M) in the Assembly, the CM said that there are many Keralites who are in the custody of the pirates for more than two years. Thomas Unniyadan said that two among them - Divin Davis and Stanley Vincent- are from Irinjalakuda, and their families are deeply worried with not even a phone call for the past one month. Chandy said that the two youths were abducted four months ago.
‘’A helpful atmosphere for evolving a policy and facilitate the release of all the Indian captives in custody of the pirates is emerging. Many Somali pirates are in the custody of the Indian forces now and hence the mutual release could be faster,’’he hoped. ‘’I’ve spoken to the PM on the matter. The state is pursuing the issue in all its seriousness,’’ the CM maintained.
