CHENNAI: After repeated deadline revisions over the past one year, construction work for the Rangarajapuram flyover, a joint venture between Chennai Corporation and Railways at an estimated cost of Rs 23.76 crore in Kodambakkam, finally seems to be progressing on right track.Construction of one of the two arms in the ‘Y’ shaped bridge connecting Bazullah Road and Kodambakkam railway station has reached its final stages and the facility will be thrown open to traffic in another 10 days, Mayor M Subramanian told reporters after inspecting the ongoing works here on Monday. However, construction of another arm connecting Bazullah Road and Rangarajapuram in Kodambakkam would be completed by the end of the year, Subramanian added.Bowing to demands from the local residents and to ease traffic snarls in the congested Kodambakkam area, the Chennai Corporation, in association with the Railways, had envisaged the 962metre-long flyover in 2006 and work orders for the bridge were issued in 2008. Due to the lack of coordination between the civic body and railways, the deadline for completing the flyover’s construction works was missed several times in the past and the latest inspection by the Mayor Subramanian on Monday was his fifth one. When the Mayor inspected the flyover site in October last, he had announced that it would be completed and inaugurated to traffic by January. Of the `23.76 crore-project cost, Chennai Corporation is spending about `16 crore and the rest (`8 crores) is being borne by the railways. Once the flyover is opened for public, it is likely to ease the flow of traffic in and around Kodambakkam, T Nagar and Mambalam.
