CHENNAI : The Chennai Corporation on Thursday held a demonstration of a new method to kill the common water hyacinth, carrying forward its fight against this proliferating menace in the lakes and ponds in the city. Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy inaugurated the demonstration at a pond in Velachery, where a mixture of herbs and pydocide-90 was sprayed on the plants. The plants shrivelled and died within two hours of being sprayed. The method was demonstrated by Erode-based agency Eco Health.A press release said the Corporation was looking for ways to deal with the water hyacinth, which hindered the drainage of rain water during the storm season. Three hundred kilos of the mixture will have to be used for 6,000 litres of water in this method, which the release said had recently been tested successfully in a canal in Ellis Nagar in Madurai.“The Corporation is looking into the feasibility of employing this method in Chennai. We will monitor this lake and if the results of the demonstration are good we will take it up across the city,” said Duraisamy.Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan, Deputy Commissioner (Works) R Anandakumar, Regional Deputy Commissioner (South) V Mohanraj, Zonal Assistant Commissioner Kalimuthu, the Zonal Committee Chairman and local councillors witnessed the demonstration.
