Though art gains dimension with exposure to different media, abstracts are the only viable gate for an artist to experiment with the medium that leads him to different roads. The forms and figures of the three artists’ paper works at Beneath the surface, Apparao Galleries take you to sublime planes through the realms of myth and fantasy. Their interwoven mixed feelings are obscurely communicated with positive forces which delve deep into the hidden metaphors of life.Manish Nai’s illustrations are sensitised with his selective effects on textures. His methodology entails sticking the jute on butter paper or handmade sheet, then furnishing it with lucid colours and finally weeding out the selected threads. The expressive layers of the coloured jute reveal his penchant for underlying designs. His art intercede space between the concealed and open worlds. The process of chopping and removing threads indicate the chaos in today’s social syndrome. Manish has turned jute into a classy medium to transmit his standpoints on his father’s hearing loss in the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. His jute works talk about his father’s life as a jute dealer. The artist is a recipient of The Pollok Krasner Foundation Award for Arts (New York).Smriti Dixit’s art works trace her involvement for stitching. Having conceded the ongoing art — sewing, the artist renews the patterns, incorporating contemporary abstract works on it. Instead of silence, an unquiet rages both within and without. She retains robust unrefined components in her pieces and also Dixit’s every work differs from that of her previous ones, though visually appealing the same.On working with fibre and textile on paper, the material has come alive with her reciprocation. Her search is to understand the soul of each material. The artist’s human way of approach is evident as she re-creates, re-invents and gels with the art forms that involve rebirth, re-process on renewal grounds. Her style of knitting, twisting and wrapping fabric is the central element of the textured mixed-media pieces.A textile designer by profession, Dixit dramatises art pieces with her inner sensual webbed theories.Late Sohan Qatari’s meditative quality in his survival philosophy — yoga has a direct connection with the artist’s paintings. His treatment with colours forms a space like a subtle flow of medium on inclined surfaces.Depicting a serene look and quiet moments of his life, his inks and water refine what he had to say.Qatari’s abstracts are mood-specific. The colours — aquamarine and pristine yellow — resonates his tones of vibrancy. Combining terrain and colours, the artist has painted his works with an insight. His art belongs to one who touches the ultimate secret (albeit reality) and his life experience has bound art as a window of perceptions.Man’s deepest sensibilities are being assaulted and the tones of black against the colour convey these layers of despair. Qatari’s works are tight-packed and filled with acute levels of consciousness.(The exhibition is on at Apparao Galleries till July 30. For more information, call 28332226)
