Corresponding with the crackdown on the granite mafia in Madurai, the Krishnagiri administration swooped down on 62 of the 123 quarries in the district on Thursday.
Cases were registered against the owners of several quarries in the light of irregularities unearthed during the raids.
Collector C N Maheshwaran said the raids, necessitated by reports of excessive quarrying and other such violations, were carried out by five special teams led by officers in the rank of sub collector.
Irregularities were found in two granite quarries in Sandhanapalli and Irudukottai, nine regular stone quarries in Nagamangalam and two granite quarries in Pochampalli, the Collector detailed, while adding that cases have been booked against the respective owners. Action would be taken on the basis of reports to be submitted by the special teams once the raids concluded, he added.
