CHENNAI: Police officers and the public bore witness to the thrashing of a lawyer by family members of a 20-year-old woman in the busy Commissioner of Police’s (CoP) office on Tuesday. Police later arrested six family members, including the girl’s parents, over the incident.According to Kavitha of Puzhudivakkam, Madipakkam, she had come to the CoP’s office to lodge a complaint along with her lawyer Shivashanmugarajan when her parents and others surrounded the latter and had beaten him up as they thought that she was acting under the influence of the lawyer. Kavitha alleged that her parents Kuppusamy, a security guard in a company in Sholinganallur, and Mythili had forced her to get married to a much older man against her wish. “I am studying B.Sc Maths and want to study M.Sc and go for work. I have a younger sister and my parents are forcing me to get married. They threatened to finish me off similar to the ‘honour killing’ in Tiruvallur recently,” she said. She further alleged that she had approached her school teacher after walking out of her house against her parents’ wishes three days ago. “My teacher told me that I can file a complaint. So, I came with her and her husband, who is a lawyer,” she said.Police said they arrested Kavitha’s parents, uncle Gajendran, aunt Gajalakshmi and brother Mani.
