A lady from Guskara municipality, Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal named Beauty Begum (43) died recently. The deceased woman’s husband Hasmat Sheikh had to take her body in the car, which he had purchased 10 months ago. According to Local 18 Bengal, there was no other conveyance available for Sheikh to bring the dead body home. Begum had died under the collision’s impact when a goods train rammed into the Kanchenjunga Express at Chhoto Nirmaljote area near Siliguri. As per reports, the Guskara woman was supposed to return home by another train on June 17, but she failed to board that train. With no other option, she had to board the Kanchenjunga Express to return home located in Guskara municipality.
Hasmat said that he is employed in a private organisation in Siliguri. His wife Begum had been living with him for the past 1 month. She was supposed to return home in Guskara on June 17, Monday. She woke up early on June 17 morning to cook for her husband. When her husband had finished eating his breakfast, Begum went out to board the train with her husband. Hasmat bought fruit and biscuits for his wife, dropped her at the station and left for his workplace. After getting the news about the Kanchenjunga Express accident, Hasmat immediately reached the Jalpaiguri District Hospital. In the hospital, he identified his wife’s body and returned home on June 18. A pall of gloom descended on his family members and neighbours due to the demise.
Kavach system missing
According to the reports, the Kavach system was unavailable on the tracks in Darjeeling, where the two trains collided on June 17. Kavach is a made-in-India system to help prevent accidents if two trains are travelling on the same line.
Allegations by the opposition leaders
Opposition leaders slammed the Narendra Modi government over the Kanchanjunga Express accident in West Bengal on June 17. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that “in the past 10 years, the Modi government indulged in the utter mismanagement of the Railway Ministry.”
Railways to hold inquiry on June 19
The chief commissioner of Railway Safety, Northeast Frontier Railway, Janak Kumar Garg, will conduct a statutory inquiry on June 19 into the Kanchenjunga Express.
