MADURAI: Twenty two years after a life convict jumped parole, the Madurai police nabbed him in the city outskirts on Monday.
Now, Virumandi (57) must spend 10 more years behind bars, as the police have slapped yet another case of absconding against him. According to the police, Virumandi was arrested, along with two others, from Meenakshipuram in Sellur, on charges of murdering his neighbour in 1979. The trio was sentenced to life term by a local court two years later.

"The convict (Virumandi) committed the crime just three days after his marriage, when he was in his mid20s," a police officer said.

Thereafter, he tried his luck by starting a business at Tirumangalam, but was unsuccessful. He then moved to Pattukottai in Thanjavur, where he was engaged in illegal sand mining.

"We began our search operations from Meenakshipuram, where he was residing three decades ago. We then traced the address of his brother, who was living at Sholavandan," SubInspector Mahendran said.

He was sent to the same Cuddalore jail, after being produced at a local court on charges of absconding.
