MADURAI: In the wake of the violence between cops and the supporters of the Immanuel Sekaran proceeding towards Paramakudi, a police inspector opened fire in which two persons were injured and over 50 vehicles were damaged in the afternoon near Chinthamani Ring Road near here on Sunday.To participate in the 54th Immanuel Sekaran Memorial Day observations in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, a large number of supporters kept arriving at the venue here from early morning. A group coming by a open lorry from Pattam in Sivagangai district was allegedly intercepted by Avaniapuram Inspector Gajendran around 1 pm near Chinthamani junction. After heated arguments with the police, they group allegedly attacked them, including Inspector Gajendran, SI Shanmugam and a woman constable Kaliammal. Hence, Gajendran was forced to open fire injuring two persons Jayaprasath (19), and Balakrishnan (20), of Pattam village. The firing worsened the situation and the supporters stoned buses and other vehicles. In the incident, around 50 vehicles, including seven buses, were damaged. A conductor, A M Mookaiah, whose right forefinger was injured, said that the protesters threatened drivers to stop the vehicles with dire consequences. A pregnant woman had a miraculous escape and passengers fled for their life.Meanwhile, protesters dispersed as a posse of police personnel arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control. Then the injured, including three cops, were moved to the GRH. On information, Collector U Sagayam and the SP rushed to the spot to assess the situation.
