New Delhi: Pakistan President Pervez Musharaff has apologised for Friday's police action on the offices of Geo TV in Islamabad and claims that the incident could be part of a larger conspiracy against him.

In an attempt to save face, the Pakistan government has suspended 14 policemen for their involvement in the attack.

A government announcement late on Friday night said that Inspector Khalid Mehmood and 13 constables of Punjab province have been suspended pending an inquiry.

On Friday, Pakistan police personnel stormed the office of private news channel Geo TV in Islamabad, in what is being perceived as an attack on the freedom of press.

They smashed window panes, damaged computers and other equipment. The police were also seen assaulting journalists and lobbing tear gas shells into the building.

Officials allegedly targeted the channel because it had given wide publicity to the sacking of Pakistan Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikar Chaudhry, and the subsequent protests by lawyers.

The channel was blacked out in the country after it telecast pictures of Chaudhury being manhandled by security personnel on Tuesday.
