Indore: A CBI court in Indore on Monday awarded life sentences to 11 SIMI operatives, including its former chief Safdar Naugauri on charges of treason.
One of the convicts, Munroz, who was out on bail, was also arrested by police to serve the sentence, said the District Prosecution Officer Vimal Mishra.
The CBI court delivered the verdict through video conferencing as all convicts including Nagauri are presently lodged in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati jail in Gujarat.
Being tried for Ahmedabad bomb blast cases, the accused heard the quantum of punishment in Gujarat jail.
The accused were also charged with plotting terror incidents, possessing illegal arms and being members of banned outfit.
Police had claimed to arrest Nagauri and 12 other SIMI operatives from a flat in Sanyogitaganj area in Indore in 2008, a claim which opposed by defence lawyers.
Police also said to have recovered arms, ammunition, radical literature and explosives from a farmhouse in Choral where SIMI activists allegedly used to train its members in physical exercise, combat and organisation philosophy.
Malwa region in Madhya Pradesh was the hotbed of the SIMI activities.
SIMI was earlier put under the list of banned outfits by the Centre over its role in terror activities.
