The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to grant interim relief to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, arrested by the ED in a money laundering case linked to the excise policy ‘scam’.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notice on the Aam Aadmi Party leader’s petition challenging his arrest and the subsequent remand granted to ED and asked the agency to file its response, including on interim relief, before April 2.
The judge, in the order, stated that the matter would be taken up for final disposal on April 3 and no adjournment shall be granted. Seeking relief for Kejriwal, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said he was arrested based on “uncorroborated” statements of two co-accused and called them “Jaichands and Trojan horses” for their “betrayal”.
Additional Solicitor General Raju appeared in the court on behalf of ED. When the ED lawyers were about to start the arguments, senior advocate Amit Desai also wanted to argue on behalf of Kejriwal, but Raju opposed it. He said that if this happens, ten lawyers will also come for ED. The court also said that it would listen to ED first. “If Desai wants, he can write his note and give it,” it said.
On Thursday, in a high-octane courtroom drama, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday alleged a ‘political conspiracy’ behind his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to the money laundering case related to a controversial liquor policy case in the national capital. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo was produced in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court in-person on Thursday as his custody with the agency came to an end.
Detailing several things related to the case, Kejriwal questioned whether the ED has enough reasons to arrest a sitting Chief Minister with no case filed against him.
Kejriwal made the submissions as the Enforcement Directorate produced him in the court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja and sought seven-day further custody, arguing he needs to be confronted with some people linked with the case.
The ED said the AAP supremo was giving evasive replies and not disclosing passwords of his digital devices.
