'We are Safe for Now, but Fear of Attack is Always There’: Telangana Workers Stranded in Israel
Nearly 15 Telangana workers stuck in a building in a satellite town of Tel Aviv in Israel told News18 whenever the bomb sirens go off, they have to hide in the bunker rooms till they stop | News18 report

A group of workers from Telangana are stuck in a building in Ramat Gan in Israel and waiting for the war to get over. Ramat Gan is a satellite town in Tel Aviv. Rajesh Medichermala, who works at a supermarket there, told News18: “We are safe at present as we are located far away from Gaza. However, the fear of being attacked is always there. We are praying to God that this war ends soon. We have full faith in Israeli authorities for our protection.”

Medichermala lives in the same building in Ramat Gan along with 15 others from Telangana ever since they set foot in the country. A member of Telangana Association of Israel, Medichermala estimates that there are nearly 600 workers from Telangana living in Israel. “We hail mainly from these four districts — Nizamabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar and Warangal. We are engaged in various professions. While some of us work in supermarkets, petrol bunks and hotels, many of us work as caregivers for the elderly here. Besides Indians, many Sri Lankans too work here as caregivers.”

He further said whenever the bomb sirens go off, they have to hide in the bunker rooms till they stop. “They enforce it very strictly here. The soldiers make sure that we stay in the bunker room till the probability of danger comes down,” he said.

The group is in touch with officials from the Indian embassy in Tel Aviv and BJP leaders from Telangana. “We have spoken to Nizamabad MP Arvind Dharmapuri. Last night, we spoke to Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar. They have assured us of all possible help,” Medichermala said.

The members of the group have been living in Tel Aviv for the last six to eight years. None of them has their family in Israel. They have stocked up food and other essentials for a few days. They have electricity and internet connection. When they go out, they are not allowed to go beyond 1-2 km, as told to News18.

“The senseless killings have shaken us. They gunned down those poor young students from Nepal. They cut up children like they butcher hens at chicken shops. This happened because the country’s politicians were engaged in squabbles, otherwise they do not even allow a fly to get past the country’s borders. However, we have full faith in the authorities that they will protect us,” added Medichermala.

Israel has gone all ballistic ever since the Hamas attacked Gaza on October 7. More than 3,000 casualties have been reported in the ongoing war between the Hamas and Israeli forces. Explosions took place across the country from Ashkelon to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Hamas has taken 150 prisoners back to Gaza across the border that they had breached.
