Is your crush a lit nerd? Many great romantic lines have already been written—why not sprinkle some quotes from the masters into your conversation? “If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.” (Jane Austen, Emma) “I have a strange feeling with regard to you. As if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly knotted to a similar string in you. And if you were to leave I'm afraid that cord of communion would snap. And I have a notion that I'd take to bleeding inwardly.” (Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre) “The practice of love offers no place of safety. We risk loss, hurt, pain. We risk being acted upon by forces outside our control.” (bell hooks, All About Love)

I Love You Paragraphs

“Jeff, I can’t stay silent on this anymore: I absolutely adore you. You’re the most amazing guy I’ve ever met, and I just had to tell you that. I don’t know if you feel the same, and I totally get it if you’re not on the same page, but I had to try.”

“Beth, I’m in love with you. I’ve never known anyone like you, and I think we’d make a great pair. I’d love to take you to dinner this weekend—what do you say?”

“Cards on the table: I’m super into you. I’m so into you it’s not even funny. I know we’ve been joking around a lot the last week or 2, and it’s been so much fun, but it’s time to get serious: I’m in love with you.”

“Every minute I spend away from you is agony. Everything I do, I do thinking about you. The last month of talking to you has convinced me we belong together. The thought of not being with you—I can’t breathe. I don’t know if you feel the same way, but if you do, it’ll make me happier than I’ve ever been in my life.”

Customization Tips

Tailor your text to your crush’s experience, if possible. They’re sure to appreciate a friendly, supportive text message, but your message will be especially meaningful if you know they’ve got something particularly hectic or stressful planned, like a job interview or a math exam. The more you can tailor your text to your crush’s situation, the more meaningful they’ll find it. Customizing your text to reflect your crush’s mood, personality, daily schedule, upcoming plans, or life experience will show them you’re paying attention to them—a subtle way to show you care for them that they’re sure to appreciate!

Keep your message surface-level if you don't know them well. Whether you’ve only just begun chatting or you’re tiptoeing towards relationship territory, everyone likes to get a friendly, encouraging text message, but the depth and vulnerability you display in your text message will depend on how close you are to your crush. If your crush gave you their number yesterday, it’s probably best not to send them a block of text about how you’re both soulmates. Take it slow! Start with a cheerful, lowkey good morning text instead that makes it clear you like them, but that doesn’t come on too strongly. Dole out sincere but lighthearted compliments, or grab their attention by letting them know you’re thinking about them. Maybe include a meme you think they’ll love.

Get a little more vulnerable if you’ve been talking for a while. If you’ve built a solid foundation with your crush and you think they might have feelings for you too, you can be a bit more vulnerable with your message. A raw, honest message about how much your crush means to you is sure to create a stronger connection between you both. A sincere text to let them know how much joy and peace they bring to your life is sure to make them smile—and draw them closer to you. If you haven’t shared your true feelings with your crush yet, a text or DM can be a great way to tell them you love them without the pressure of a face-to-face confession. When confessing your feelings, you can play it cool and practical and let them know you’d like to try going out on a date, or lay your feelings out on the table and tell them you’re head-over-heels in love. Regardless, be open and sincere—and then leave the ball in their court.

What's your reaction?
