'Such High-level Matches Require Even More Careful Umpiring': Hockey India Chief Dilip Tirkey
The India vs Great Britain hockey quarter-final game witnessed a few wrong calls affecting India’s outing at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on Sunday

Former captain and current Hockey India (HI) chief Dilip Tirkey has called for improved and better refereeing at the Paris Olympics 2024. His statement comes after India’s thrilling win over Great Britain in the men’s hockey quarter-final on Sunday. The game witnessed a few wrong calls affecting India’s outing at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium. India played for most of 3 quarters with 10 men as Amit Rohidas was given a red card. However, the game ended in a 1-1 draw after which India defeated Great Britain 4-2 in the shootouts.

Speaking to India Today, HI chief Tirkey praised the Indian hockey team’s performance in the quarter-finals, adding that big games require ‘more careful umpiring’.

“This team is absolutely commendable, and playing ten to forty-five minutes is a very difficult task, I know that. Holding on like that because we couldn’t attack. With a full team of ten, we couldn’t attack repeatedly, and you can see the result because we didn’t get the opportunity to attack… They stopped it with such effort and managed to hold on for sixty minutes, which is praiseworthy,” Tirkey told the news channel.

“This is the Olympics, and it’s a quarter-final match. Such high-level matches require even more careful umpiring. Both teams want to win, and if the umpiring is off, it can disturb the teams. But I understand that in today’s match, it was not intentional.

“We should understand that. There was also a green card incident with Sumit, which should be understood. According to the rules, notepads should not be kept on the side where the shoot-out is happening. This can create disturbance. Such things should be taken care of. However, they say, ‘All’s well that ends well’,” Tirkey added.

Red card to Rohidas

Defender Amit Rohidas received a red card on the 17th minute of the match. He was trying to run with the ball and was being challenged by Will Calnan. However, the Indian defender’s stick was in an unnatural position and hit Calnan on the head.

The referees had a thorough discussion and gave a red card to Rohidas. Despite playing a significant part of the game with a man short, Harmanpreet Singh-led India took the game to shootouts where thumped Great Britain, making it to a second consecutive Olympics semi-final.
