Fuelling speculations that he has handed a transfer request, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has changed his Twitter credentials to '@NikeUK athlete' from 'Manchester United footballer'.
In a move that will surely irk Manchester United fans, Rooney took an unusual step when he removed the name of 'Manchester United' from his official Twitter account, indicating that he indeed has handed a transfer request.
Late on Wednesday, it emerged that Rooney has informed the club of his desire to leave, for the second time in three years. United have rejected the idea. "Wayne Rooney is not for sale," media reports quoted their United source as saying.
However, it has also been learnt that Rooney is not happy at being asked to play out of position during the latter weeks of the season and, with Robin van Persie impressing in his debut season at United, wondered whether he had a future at United.
Ferguson's impending departure, after he announced his retirement on Wednesday, coupled with Everton coach David Moyes' likely arrival, could bring Rooney back together with his first boss at Everton. But that will only happen if he decides to stay back at Old Trafford.
