As the announcement of Sunil Chhetri’s retirement from International football has taken social media by storm, some big accounts on social media have given their reactions to the news.

Chhetri finishes his career as the most prolific goal-scorer for the country with a tally of 94 goals for the nation and is fourth in the all-time list among international goal-scorers too.

He announced his retirement on X where he posted a 10-minute video where he went in depth regarding his decision to call time on his national career.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India posted a heartfelt message on Chhetri’s retirement and hailed the 39-year-old for being an icon not just for football but also for sports as a collective.

The Indian cricket icon and his friend, Virat Kohli had also left a comment on Chhetri’s video on Instagram where he revealed how proud he felt of his brother. He said, “My Brother, PROUD”.

India’s starting goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sadhu had also reacted to the announcement on his social media where he wished that he could change Chhetri’s mind but also understands why he has taken the decision and called for the country to celebrate his immense career for the national side.

The chairman of Mohun Bagan Super Giants, Sanjiv Goenka also posted a heartfelt note on his official handle on X where he said that Chhetri’s exploits have left an indelible mark on the sport and wished him the best on his next chapter in life.
