Madrid: Angel di Maria is likely to miss Real Madrid's Copa del Rey match against Malaga on Tuesday because of a leg injury.

Madrid say the Argentina forward injured a muscle in his right thigh in training on Saturday, although the Spanish club did not say how long Di Maria would be sidelined.

The club's medical staff revealed that the 23-year-old suffered a "microscopic tear in the right thigh muscle," after he participated in Saturday's practice.

The doctors also did not reveal how long the injury would keep Di Maria out of action, but he looks almost certain to be ruled out of Madrid's Copa del Rey tie against Malaga. The two teams meet on January 4 at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first leg of their last-16 clash.

Di Maria, who has been one of the Spanish league leaders' standout players this season, also missed playing time in November with a hamstring injury.

Madrid, who lead defending champions Barcelona by three points, have their next league game on January 7 against Granada.
