Chirag warded off second half challenge to down Salgaocar 2-1.

Margao: Chirag United warded off second half challenge to down a fighting Salgaocar 2-1 in the 17th round of the I-League, played at Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.

Chirag United who led 2-0 at half time scored through Josimar Da Silva Martins(13th) and Ashim iswas(44th).

Salgaocar who fought back in the second half reduced the margin through Substitute Beevan D?Mello(57th).

The first half was mainly a midfield affairs. Salgaocar failed to display the same fighting spirit which they showed against Dempo. The defence in the absence of Luciano Sabrosa looked ineffective as they allowed lot of space for the rival strikers and conceded two goals in the first half.

Chirag United took the lead in the 13th minute through a penalty after Joshimar Da Silva was brought inside the box by Milagres Gonsalves while going for a tackle and referee gave penalty which Joshimar Da Silva converted by beating keeper Kalyan Chaubey to lead the scoring chart by 14 goals.

Ashim Biswas who missed couple of scoring chances then increased the lead in the 44th minute when he beat rival defender and took a shot which deflected defender Rino Anto and went in.

Salgaocar brought in fresh legs in the second half bringing in Lestor Fernandes in place of injured Rino Anto and Beevan D?Mello in place of out of form Keita Mandjou, raised their game to several notches, reduced the margin in the 57th minute when substitute Beevan D?Mello headed in off a flag kick taken by Rocus Lamare from the left.
