The story of Lord Ram will be included in the new syllabus for madrasas affiliated with the Uttarakhand Waqf Board beginning in March this year, said Chairman Shadab Shams on January 25. He stated that madrasa students will learn about Lord Ram’s life alongside that of Prophet Mohammad.
Seasoned Muslim clerics have also supported the move, according to Shadab Shams, who is also a BJP leader, adding that the values represented by Shri Ram are worth following by everyone, regardless of religion or faith. The waqf board oversees 117 madrasas, and the proposed modern syllabus will be implemented first in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital districts, he explained.
“The study of Shri Ram will be introduced in the Madrasas affiliated with the Waqf Board as part of our madrasa modernisation programme from March this year. Someone who gave up the throne and went to the forest to help his father keep a commitment! Who wouldn’t want to have a son like Shri Ram,” Uttarakhand Waqf Board Chairman Shams told PTI.
Shams further quoted 20th-century Muslim philosopher Allama Iqbal, saying, “India is proud of the existence of Lord Ram, and people regard him as the leader of ‘Hind’. Lord Lakshman and Goddess Sita, who accompanied Lord Ram to the forest during ‘vanvaas’ and abandoned the comforts of the kingdom, were also very inspiring” as quoted by PTI. He stated that Indian Muslims are not Arabs, Mongols, or Afghans and will educate students on Indian cultural icons. He also claimed that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books would be introduced in madrasas.
