MoE Forms 4-Member Panel Led by Former UPSC Chairperson to Review NEET UG Results of Over 1500 Candidates
This committee headed by a former UPSC Chairperson, will thoroughly investigate the concerns filed by candidates and look into them promptly

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has constituted a four-member high-powered committee to “review” the results of over 1500 NEET-UG 2024 candidates from six exam centres across the country, who lost time due to different “administrative reasons” at the centres and were awarded grace marks to compensate for the same, it said on Saturday. The panel will be led by a former Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) chairperson, the MoE said.

The move comes amid allegations of inflated marks leading to 67 candidates sharing All India Rank (AIR) one in the exam, four days after results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) were announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 4. Since the release of the results, parents and students have raised concerns about the validity of the results. A record over 24 lakh candidates appeared for the exam this year.

According to NTA Director-General (DG) Subodh Kumar Singh, the six centres where students were compensated for the time lost are —- Bahadurgarh, Dantewada, Baloch, Surat, Chandigarh and Meghalaya. A total of 1563 candidates wrote the exam from these six centres.

“There were different administrative reasons for each of the six centres for loss of time including a wrong set of question paper being distributed. The exam here was concluded at the scheduled time even though it started late from the due time and hence we had to award grace marks to compensate them for time lost,” said Singh.

Grace marks are awarded based on the candidate’s efficiency in answering the questions and the number of questions they attempted in the time that was available to them, he said.

However, he added, that the awarding of grace or compensatory marks has not impacted the qualifying criteria of the exam and that the review of results of the affected candidates will not impact the admission process. “The panel will revisit the results of these over 1500 candidates and will give its recommendation within a week,” he said.

When asked if the exam will be rescheduled for candidates from these centres, Singh said that “it will depend on the decision and findings of the panel.”

Several students have also approached the apex court on the results. Meanwhile, Singh denied any paper leak and irregularities in the exam and reiterated that the integrity of the crucial test had not been compromised. The Congress in Kerala alleged that results have raised concerns about the authenticity of the national exam for medical courses, with many students casting doubt on the procedure.
