Kendriya Vidyalaya Scraps MP Quota For Admission, Focus Shifts To Merit-based System
An MP is not eligible anymore to get a child admitted to the Kendriya Vidyalaya.

The admission process in the Kendriya Vidyalaya government schools has started. To get their children admitted to the institution, many parents opt for quotas available apart from other means available for admission. So, the question arises, can an MP (Member of Parliament) get your child admitted in Kendriya Vidyalaya? Here is the answer.

To answer the question, an MP cannot help a student in getting admitted to the Kendriya Vidyalaya. According to more information, the central government abolished several quotas for admission in the Kendriya Vidyalaya, which included the MP quota.

There are several quotas through which a student can get a preference during the admissions. These include the government employee children, PSU and the children of ex-army men. The children of ordinary people are given admission to the remaining seats. Apart from the MP quotas, several other quotas like quotas of the former employees and officers, along with district officers were abolished in 2022.

Before the quota abolishment year, there was a fixed MP quota for admissions. According to the MP quota, a Member of Parliament had the authority to recommend 10 children for admission at the start of the academic session in the Kendriya Vidyalaya, each year. The recommendations could be made for admission in classes 1 to 9. Moreover, the MP could only recommend those children whose parents were from the MP’s constituency.

Reportedly, 7880 students were admitted to the Kendriya Vidyalaya every year through the MP quota. This number went even higher since a lot of people used this quota as a source for more admissions.

In the session of 2018-19, a total of 8,164 admissions were made under this quota. Then in 2019-20, around 9411 admissions took place through this quota. However, for the session of 2021-22, 7301 admissions were done in this quota. Finally, in 2022, this quota was abolished by the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Some special quotas have been retained like the children of Mahavir Chakra, Param Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Vir Chakra, Shaurya Chakra and Kirti Chakra awardees are eligible for admissions in Kendriya Vidyalaya.
