Ever since the Agniveer Scheme was started in India in 2022, it has been in constant discussion, attracting both supporters as well as detractors. Opposition parties in the country have criticised and expressed concerns about the consequences of the new scheme. The youth keep getting drawn to the scheme to serve in the defence forces for a four year period. Wing Commander Abhishek Katoch informed Local18 that the online registration for Agniveer Air Recruitment 2025 under the Agneepath Scheme in the Indian Air Force will commence on July 8. Candidates interested in applying can find detailed information on the official Indian Air Force website at agnipathvayu.cdac.in. The registration window will be open from July 8 at 11 am to July 28 at 11 pm.
Wing Commander Abhishek Katoch further informed Local18 that unmarried male and female candidates born between January 3 2008 and July 3 2004 (both dates inclusive) are eligible for this recruitment. Candidates must have passed the 12th class or its equivalent examination with Maths, Physics, and English in the Science stream, or with 50% marks in any subject in the Arts and Commerce streams, including 50% marks in English. Candidates holding a 3-year Engineering Diploma or a 2-year Vocational Course are also eligible to apply.
Before the introduction of the Agneepath scheme, soldiers were recruited into the armed forces on a 15+ year tenure with a lifelong pension. From 2019, recruitment in the armed forces was halted for three years, with the Indian Government attributing this to the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers continued to retire annually, causing a personnel shortage that began to impact the operational capabilities of the armed forces. In 2020, a Tour of Duty scheme was proposed to allow civilians to join the forces for three years of short service on a voluntary basis. This scheme was intended to be a trial, starting with a test group of 100 officers and 1,000 soldiers.
