Batting great Sunil Gavaskar criticised young India batter Shubman Gill’s poor shot selection to get out against England in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test on Friday. Shubman’s poor run in Test cricket continued as he succumbed under pressure in the opening Test and was dismissed for just 23. The talented batter failed to get going as the dot-ball pressure forced him to play a loose shot which ended up in his dismissal in the first session on Day 2.
It was the fifth ball of the 35th over and Gill tried to break the shackles and played the shot at mid-wicket where Ben Duckett took an easy catch to end his stay in the middle. He became the first victim of debutant Tom Hartley in Test cricket.

Gavaskar, who was in the commentary box during Shubman’s dismissal, lashed out at the youngster badly executed on-drive.
“What kind of a shot was he looking to play? One can understand if he was looking to play it in the air but it was just a badly executed on-drive. He did all the hard work and then played a shot like that,” said Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary.
Shubman has an underwhelming batting record while batting at number 3 in Test. He has scored just 189 runs in 9 innings at an average of 23.62 and is yet to score a half-century.
He has hit two centuries and four fifties while playing as an opener in Tests but last year he asked team management to bat at the number 3 spot with Cheteshwar Pujara shown the exit doors during the West Indies Test series.
However, India made an inauspicious start to the day, losing overnight batter Yashasvi Jaiswal in the fourth ball of the day’s first over.
Jaiswal biffed a four through long-on in the second ball of that over but his attempt for an encore two balls later resulted in a tame return catch to Root.
England were understandably delighted after that wicket because an extended stay for Jaiswal would have further pushed them to the backfoot.
