The Indian women’s cricket team are yet to secure their maiden T20 World Cup title. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian team will now aim to fulfil their dream this year in the UAE. The muti-nation tournament will commence on October 3. India have been pooled in Group A alongside New Zealand, reigning champions Australia and two Asian rivals– Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign with a high-voltage fixture against New Zealand on October 4. The match will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup was previously slated to be hosted in Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) later decided to move the tournament to the UAE. India have featured in all eight editions of the Women’s T20 World Cup since 2009. They have reached the semi-finals five times. In 2020, India were close to winning the title. They were up against Australia in the final and ended up suffering an 85-run defeat.
In the last edition, India also crashed out of the knockout stage. They faced Australia in the semi-final and lost the match by a narrow margin of five runs. Shaking off the disappointment, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will look to make a strong statement at the ICC event this year.
India became the runners-up of the last women’s Asia Cup which was played in T20 format. They clashed against Sri Lanka in the final of the continental tournament and endured an eight-wicket loss.
