WATCH: Ashwin Stares at Jadeja After Horrible Mix-up Leads to Veteran Spinner’s Run-out

India have so far superbly dominated England in the first Test in Hyderabad but the batters, despite showcasing some remarkable performances, have gifted their wickets to the visiting bowlers. The second day of the Hyderabad Test began with overnight batters – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill – throwing away their wickets in the morning session and so did Shreyas Iyer who was dismissed for 35. If getting caught out wasn’t enough, the post-session saw a horrible mix-up in the middle and Ravichandran Ashwin found himself at the receiving end.

Ashwin, who walked in at No. 8, had just opened his account and was looking to forge a partnership with his spin twin Ravindra Jadeja. In the 91st over, the former punched a Joe Root delivery to the right of cover and was set-off for a quick single. Jadeja, posted at the non-striker’s end, responded to Ashwin’s call but turned back after Tom Hartley stopped the ball.

Ashwin kept running before finding himself at the same end as Jadeja. Meanwhile, Hartley threw the ball to Ben Foakes who broke the stumps without wasting an extra second. Both batters looked at each other in misery and Ashiwn walked off disappointed after scoring just 1 off 11 balls.

Jadeja continued frustrating the visitors as he was batting on 61 when Ashwin departed. Before the latter’s arrival, the left-hander notched up his 20^th Test fifty and also featured in a couple of fifty-plus partnerships in India’s reply to England’s total of 246. He joined hands with KL Rahul to add 65 runs to the fifth wicket and then stitched a 68-run stand with wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat.

Earlier, Rahul top-scored with an 86-run knock and formed as 64-run partnership with Iyer for the 4^th wicket. Imbibing confidence from his hundred against South Africa last month, the Karnataka batter showcased a picture of imperious timing and meticulous shot-selection. But all the hard work was undone when Rahul pulled a half-tracker by left-arm spinner Tom Hartely to pick Ahmed, the lone fielder in the deep at mid-wicket.

So did Iyer who was tested by Mark Wood with a barrage off short balls. But the former let the opportunity to build on slip away when he played a slog sweep of Ahmed to give a simple catch to Hartley at deep mid-wicket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal too gave away his wicket after scoring 80 in the innings. He smashed a four through long-on in the second ball of very first over of the second day but he ended up holing out to Joe Root in the same over.
