As David Warner’s international career comes to an end, there is a new kid on the block who has taken the world by storm with his explosive brand of batting that wreaked havoc in the recently concluded Indian Premier League 2024 season. Delhi Capitals’ Jake Fraser-McGurk.
The opening batter now has the nickname, ‘Baby Bull’, and Warner believes that he has the minerals to succeed in the white-ball formats. He sees a lot of himself in JFM but highlighted the importance of understanding the demands of the 50-over format is completely different to that of T20s.
“He can lock it in. And a bit like myself, you (have to learn) how to play … 50 over cricket. That’s one thing that I learnt from Twenty20. I got dropped after seven games because I didn’t really understand how to play the game of one-day cricket,” he was quoted by cricket.com.au
“So from a one-day perspective if he learns that and understands that he’ll have a fantastic career, especially batting in Australia. Best wickets in the world,” he added.
However, one big aspect he hopes to see in JFM is that he sticks to scoring the big runs and hopes to see him don the baggy green at some point in his career.
He said, “Times have changed from when I first started with all these social media things, so hopefully doesn’t read too much into that, just sticks to what he knows best – that’s scoring runs, and that’s the biggest currency you can (have) is score runs”.
“Will he play Test cricket? I think he’ll have to have a breakout year in the next 12-18 months to prove himself. I think we’ve all had to score hundreds to get your name up there (to) warrant that,” he concluded.
With Warner out of the question, the ball is truly in JFM’s court and he could be the next big batting sensation in international cricket. He has already had a stellar debut in the IPL and will almost certainly be the opening batter for next season. Australia would benefit if they are able to give him some game-time in the international format to get him accustomed to the challenges of playing for the nation.
