A new documentary series, titled The Greatest Rivalry, will be released on Netflix on the famous cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan. The OTT platform announced the development on Thursday, February 29, via an announcement video. The video features former India captain Kapil Dev and former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan holding the World Cup. Additionally, it also shows glimpses of the famous Test matches and other historic encounters that took place between the Asian arch-rivals. It is anticipated that the documentary series will delve even further and explore the psychological side of the rivalry, going beyond the boundaries of the cricket field.
The India-Pakistan rivalry is widely regarded as the most fierce rivalry in cricket alongside the one shared by England and Australia. The announcement video also gave a glimpse of the imagery of the India-Pakistan border, which teases that the documentary will dive deep into the historical, geographical, as well as political contexts behind this rivalry.
While the series’ precise release date is yet unknown, a teaser from Netflix indicates that it may be available for viewing very soon. Fans are now eager to see one of the greatest athletic rivalries brought to life on screen.
While we await for the documentary series to drop on Netflix, what we can be excited about is the fact that India and Pakistan are set to renew their rivalry in June, in the 2024 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup. The game will be played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
It will be the first meeting between the two teams since they clashed at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. In a group-stage fixture, India beat Pakistan by seven wickets to maintain their 100% win record over the Men in Green in the 50-over World Cups.
Due to seemingly never-ending political tensions between the two countries, India and Pakistan do not play a bilateral series anymore. The last time these two nations contested in a bilateral cricket series was in 2012-13, when Pakistan toured India for 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs. As far as Test cricket is concerned, it can be traced further back to 2008 when these two sides met for the last time.
