Chennai Super Kings pacer Simarjeet Singh summed up his side’s crucial victory at Chepauk alongside the club’s bowling consultant Eric Simons. After putting up a Player of the Match performance against the Rajasthan Royals, Simarjeet gave an interview about his incredible figures post-game. He asked Simons about his spectacular spell at the MA Chidambaram, wanting to know the bowling coach’s opinion of his performance. “The art and the artist. What do you think about today’s spell, coach?”, Simarjeet asked. The South African ex-cricketer responded by saying, “I think it’s been a tremendous journey, the last few weeks in fact”. A video of the interaction was later shared by the club and IPL’s official accounts on Instagram.

Simarjeet Singh started the interview by saying that Eric Simons had taught him very well, just like a father. He said, “You taught us very well, like a father. He asked for us to deliver, we have to deliver, as a son”. Next, the former South African all-rounder spoke about his role at the club. “As a coach, I can only make you as good as you are. You’ve got the skills, and I think our job as coach, at this level, is not so much to teach. It’s more about just making sure that you can be as good as you can be”, he said. This sparked a humble response from the Chennai pacer who said, “Thank you coach, it’s all your planning. I can’t take any credit, I’m just over there to bowl”.
Eric Simons further revealed how Simarjeet Singh had told him that he still wanted to improve despite putting up a show at the MA Chidambaram. “I said to you, ‘How do you feel about today’s game?’, what did you say to me?”, the ex-cricketer asked Simarjeet. The pacer responded, “I want to improve. Every time I have to improve. Not like if you are getting runs, then you are improving”.

Simarjeet Singh was phenomenal for the five-time champions in yesterday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture. With Chennai Super Kings bowling first after losing the toss, Simarjeet made an early impact by dismissing the entire top batting order of the 2008 IPL winners. He scalped the wickets of Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal to put up bowling figures of 3/26 in his four-over spell. His impressive haul enabled Chennai to halt Rajasthan at a score of 141/5. In the second half, Ruturaj Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 42-run knock to seal a five-wicket victory for Chennai.
The Chennai Super Kings now have one game remaining in IPL 2024. They will compete against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 18 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
